The Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges community of municipalities commissioned architect Hervé Regnault to design a new building to house its School of Music’s nearly 240 pupils, and soon more, in more comfortable, functional surroundings.
The double-floored volume has a vast central atrium, which serves as a waiting area leading to the different activities. The acoustic challenge in this configuration is significant. Insulating floor slabs and thick partitions were installed, reinforced by inclined interior partitions designed to trap the sound in the classrooms and individual and group instrument practice chambers. The music-for-kids department benefitted from even more special attention to both technical and sensory requirements. In this area, the architect chose to install Vibrasto cladding stretch-fitted to the walls. “With this solution we were able to create a cosy atmosphere,” he explains. “The fabric contributes softness and light that we liked a lot, both for its colour, a really lovely mustard yellow, and its feel. And because it is so flexible, it fitted perfectly to the curved walls, while also serving its acoustic purpose.” A wonderfully soft setting for young music-lovers.
