Paris Higher National Conservatory of Music and Dance

Designed by the architect Christian de Portzamparc, the Paris Higher National Conservatory of Music and Dance is one of the institutions at the heart of the Cité de la Musique in La Villette in north-eastern Paris. To accommodate the almost 1,200 students, who attend its programmes, it has been significantly renovated. The building houses two types of space: studios, study and listening rooms on the one hand, and large auditoriums, sometimes open to the general public, for multi-disciplinary activities, on the other. In every single area, acoustic requirements are very challenging.

Stereo panels had been installed in several places before the renovation. Most of them were reinstalled with more new ones. The principal had opted for sound-absorbing acoustic curtains in the studios. Mounted against hard surfaces, they make it possible to modulate the acoustics of the rooms by drawing them or not, and to match the venues precisely to the requirements of the number and types of instruments and musicians playing. For intensive use of this kind, the durability of the Aeria fabric is an essential quality. Not wanting to have uniform spaces, the principal chose a variety of colours, including a bespoke blue supplied by Texaa as a special order.
